Sunset Flamenco

Sunset Flamenco is part of a series of flamenco paintings inspired by the colours, passion and atmosphere of southern Spain.

Rather than depicting the dancer in movement, I painted her in a moment of contemplation. She has turned away from us and is looking out across the Mediterranean Sea. I like that sense of mystery. We don't know what she is thinking or what has made her pause.

I was inspired by a performance of flamenco dance and music in the Andalusian village where I live. The painting was created with brushes and palette knives, building layers of texture and rich reds, ochres and touches of blue that reflect the warmth and intensity I associate with southern Spain.

I don't feel the need to give the viewer a complete story. My story is not so relevant. The story in my art becomes the story of the viewer. I invite you to look at the painting intuitively and discover what Sunset Flamenco says to you.
