Gertrude Stein: The Woman Who Made Paris Her Own
Original artwork | Gel plate mixed media on A3 paper | 29.7 × 42 cm
Gertrude Stein was a remarkable American writer, art collector and influential figure in the artistic world of twentieth-century Paris. Her apartment became a meeting place for artists and writers, including Picasso, Matisse and Hemingway, who helped shape the future of modern art and literature.
For this portrait, part of my Women in Paris series, I wanted to capture Gertrude's strong, almost stoic personality through expressive lines, bold colours and the unpredictable textures of gel plate printing.
Rather than creating a conventional likeness, I have interpreted her character in my own colourful style, bringing together her formidable presence and the creative energy of the Parisian art world she helped shape.
Gertrude Stein was a woman who challenged conventions, followed her own path and was not afraid to be different.
This artwork is also featured in my Thursday Women series, where I explore the fascinating lives of women who contributed to the evolution of art.
