Would you like to get away, just for a few hours, from your busy thoughts, clear your head and get in touch with your creative spark?

When you scroll down you will find all you need to know  about what a mandala is, about the meaning of colours and even about how to find your personal colour - to get in the mood for this very special workshop!

What will you learn?

 I will teach you:

-   The power of mandalas and of setting an intention for your mandala

-   How to set up, design and create your unique mandala

-   For those interested in using paint, you only need 5 colours to create all the colours you want and I will show you how to mix them.(but it's recommendable to be experienced in working with acrylic paint)

The workshop itself

During the workshop we will first create the design of the mandala – on a good quality mixed media paper or a small canvas board (you may choose). I will explain about materials (materials are included), show you examples and give you a short demonstration on how to start your personal mandala.

Intention

I have called this workshop an ‘intention-mandala workshop’ because I believe it is really special to give your mandala a specific meaning or an intention.

You can either already think about this prior to the workshop or you can wait till the day of the workshop and see what shows up for you! Working with an intention will make your mandala extra special as it will become a powerful reminder for you or, in case you create your mandala for someone else, for this person. Every time you look at your mandala you will be reminded of your intention!

Feedback from a recent mandala workshop participant

I normally don't share feedback, but I thought this feedback covers what I usually get as feedback. I'm sharing this to show you what participating can do for you! Sharing with permission from Jeannie.

"THANK YOU to Renate van Nijen for a DIVINE workshop! I am not in any way an artist, but this was an incredible workshop. I was amazed that the process of making this mandala mirrored the ups and downs of my daily life.... some moments of joy and creativity, others of frustration and feeling like shutting down. But the beauty of simply being present, working on it and being drawn in..... it was magical when that happened. I didn't know I could feel that way doing art. So, I'm hooked. If you get a chance, GO TO THIS WORKSHOP! ❤ Thank you again!

What is a mandala

Mandala means "circle “in Sanskrit and is a powerful symbol that can be found in many cultures and seems to arise out of a universal human psychic matrix which is ubiquitous. It is a symmetrical design within a circle and is usually composed of colours, symbols and patterns. It is said that each mandala holds specific energy. Mandalas are perhaps best known for their symbolic and ritual use in Hinduism and Buddhism, but can also be found in Celtic and many other ancient cultures and religions.

The colours, symmetry and symbols in a mandala can create a powerful energy and help you become more relaxed, more focused and/or feeling inspired. Often people are attracted to a certain mandala in different stages in their lives. It is a subconscious process as we are drawn in by the design and the colour. You can also give your mandala a positive meaning – for example reminding you of a - to you - significant moment in your life. Each time you look at the mandala this will be a powerful inspiration to be positive.

Mandalas are also used in psychoanalyses and in medicine as a healing tool. C.G. Jung used mandalas to reveal subconscious patterns and referred to them "as an instrument of contemplation to aid concentration by narrowing down the psychic field of vision and restricting it to the centre". He went on to say that "the energy of the central point is manifested in the almost irresistible urge to become what one is, the self."

An increasing number of clinical studies suggest that meditation can boost the immune system, reduce stress, combat depression, reduce pain, lower blood pressure and stimulate the release of melatonin, a hormone believed to slow cell aging and promote restful sleep. Meditation by means of concentrating on a mandala induces harmony and inner peace. Mandalas may be used as a focal point for meditation or relaxation, as a reminder of something significant or just as a beautiful image on your wall that will help you to feel positive or to simply brighten up your day.

Colours

Colours are an important component of our life. The impact of colours can have an influence on your mind. For example, a blue sea can be calming and an intensely red sunset can fill you with the desire to create. You can also use colours to create inspiring or calm surroundings. Every colour has its own atmosphere and a unique psychological impact, although we are usually not aware of this. In India and China colour magic has been an important component of medicine for thousands of years. You can increase your inner strengths by harnessing the strength of colours.

The meaning of colours:

On the internet and in books you can find a lot of information on the specific meaning of colours. Sometimes opinions differ. Colours are believed to have both positive and negative traits. I will only focus on the positive effects of the colours for the purpose of this mandala workshop.

White:  Start a new phase. Characteristics: complete, generous, openness, unity, lightness and reveals what is hidden and untrue.

Orange: joy, optimism and the will to succeed. Characteristics: strength, gracefulness, affectionate, tolerant, freedom, contact-oriented and inexhaustible energy.

Brown: can work protectively and indicates natural wisdom and feeling with nature. Characteristics: soundness, reliability, moderation, sensible, self-consciousness, confidentiality and loyalty.

Red: Is associated with vitality, power and determination and attracts success. Characteristics: leadership, standing up for rights, creative, dynamic, perseverance, gratitude, joy and pioneer.

Pink: stands for hope, susceptibility and intimacy. It is the colour of love and friendship, reconciliation, luck and harmony.

Yellow: stimulates the spirit and represents success and knowledge. Characteristics: mental versatility, joy, originality, accuracy, expansion, tolerance, honesty and confidence.

Green: symbol for prosperity and fertility and can be comforting and calming. Characteristics: tactful, practical, stable, productive, rich in imagination, progressive involvement and relationships.

Blue: believed to be the colour of the soul, representing, among other things, healing and idealism. Characteristics: wisdom, patience, truth, spiritual, calming, healing and loyalty.

Purple: represents spiritual strength. Characteristics: sovereignty, unselfish, humanity, dignity, mentally creative, unlimited, the paranormal and belief.

Grey: represents a transitional phase. Characteristics: being informed, mental health, realism, understanding connections, opposites and respectable.

Black is often seen as something negative, but it also refers to the end of something and to new beginnings. Characteristics: a good use of power, creativity, clairvoyant gifts, and hidden treasures.

Silver is considered to be the colour of visions and intuition. Characteristics: enlightening, reflecting, unbiased, and desiring.

Gold is a symbol of well-being and a long life. Characteristics: generosity, experience, maturity, wisdom, vitality, triumph and forgiveness.

Your personal colour

This is just a bit of fun and you can take it as serious as you like. From what I understand everybody has a personal colour and that doesn’t necessarily have to be your favourite colour. You can find this colour by adding up numbers that are attached to the letters of the alphabet.

I recommend you do this before the start of the workshop as it can be a bit time consuming!

What you need to do to find your personal number is the following:

Write down your full name (I recommend with capital letters and a bit of space) and then below the letters you write the numbers that are linked to the specific letters in your name. See example below. You add up the numbers and then again add up the numbers of the total, till you end up with 1 number.

I have given many mandala workshops and it was interesting to see that many people indeed ended up with their favourite or one of their favourite colours!

The main colour distinctions are used for this table of colours and numbers (this information is taken from the book ‘Discover the magic of colour’ by Lilian Verner Bonds)
